Ali Miller and her functional medicine practitioners combine your medical history, personal intake, prior lab values, medications, supplements, diet, and lifestyle when assessing the causes of symptoms or areas of focus. In addition to reviewing labs from your physician and medical team, your practitioner may recommend additional cutting-edge functional lab tests in order to get the most detailed information about your body and your metabolic function.
As Registered Dietitian with a background in functional integrative medicine, Ali understands how to interpret common medical lab tests and can apply a more functional or sensitive reference range where appropriate. However, the labs listed below offer a more thorough assessment of the systems of the body to provide information that many standard labs overlook or fail to assess.
Do you feel like there is something wrong with your body but you have been told that everything is “normal” yet you know that there is something going on with your body?
I often hear: “My physician runs a LOT of labs!” When truly all the patient has run is a fasting lipid panel, HgbA1c, comprehensive metabolic panel, complete blood count, vitamin D, TSH and T4 to assess thyroid. This may sound like a lot of labs, however; it truly only knicks the surface!
Fasting lipids overlook the state of inflammation of the vessels, the particle side of lipids, oxidative risk, and stickiness factor of the blood to assess for true risk of heart disease and stroke.
HgbA1c looks at a 3 month average of blood sugar levels but fails to assess fasting insulin response, c-peptide hormone, glucose, adiponectin, and inflammation all of which play an essential role in understanding why blood sugar levels are elevated, drivers of prediabetes and diabetes, the function of the pancreas, and elements of insulin resistance.
A comprehensive metabolic panel is not very comprehensive, it provides a snapshot of the liver and kidney function and electrolyte stability. It does not look at how the liver processes toxins, whether there is stress to the immune system, or micronutrient status including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
TSH and T4 assess the thyroid releasing hormone and inactive form of the thyroid hormone. As the TSH is released by the pituitary gland in the brain and the T4 assesses the inactive form of thyroid hormone, often hypothyroidism, autoimmune thyroiditis, and other forms of metabolic and endocrine dysfunction can be overlooked. A functional medicine thyroid test uses 8 key indicators to give a clear picture of thyroid function including inflammatory and autoimmune responses of the thyroid gland, the amount of active hormone available, and the ability of the hormone to bind to the gland.
WHY ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE LABS ARE DIFFERENT?
- More sensitive ranges and more thorough assessment
- Upstream approach to medicine looking at root causes and earlier detection
- Multitude of factors vs 1 or 2 to dig deeper into the area of concern
Are you suffering from a stubborn health problem that won’t go away no matter what you try? Or perhaps you feel like the medications and treatments you’re taking aren’t actually getting at the root cause of your illness and may merely be a temporary solution.
The primary labs run are listed below along with the functional lab testing companies that Ali holds accounts with and can order a variety of additional assessments from.
Take a look at the top 12 functional medicine labs but there are hundreds of labs available to active clients. To become an active client, schedule an initial consultation today!

Labs can be drawn at any phlebotomist (medical blood lab) that is not contracted solely to Labcorp, Quest, or closed contracts. Upon ordering your labs, you will receive an email with a link to lab drawing clinics close to your area. Based on your particular lab, you may be fasting (no food or drink for 12 hours prior to draw) or doing a draw in the afternoon following a couple meals. Particular instructions will be included in your lab kit and noted again in email from our team.
MRT (Mediatory Release Test) Panel
MRT (Mediatory Release Test) panel determines food allergies/sensitivities with a T cell immune regulated antibody-antigen relationship of inflammation. The MRT test is successfully used to develop a customized elimination diet to address: Migraines, ADHD, Digestive disturbances/IBS, Leaky Gut, Autoimmune conditions, Skin conditions, Fibromyalgia, Inflammatory conditions, difficulty with weight loss.
Micronutrient Panel assesses if the foods you are eating or supplements you are taking are actually being absorbed into your body and present at the cellular level. This will look at a variety of micronutrients involved in metabolism as well as antioxidants and an immune score.
Vitamin D Blood Spot
Vitamin D plays a vital role in immune, hormone, thyroid, cardiovascular and metabolic health. Ensuring you are at an optimal level of 50-80ng/mL is important for optimal health. This convenient at home blood spot test will give you an accurate value so you can adjust your supplementation appropriately and ensure you are in an optimal state for cold, flu, virus season.
Cardio Metabolic Panel *
Cardio Metabolic panel (includes LPP and Diabetes Risk panel) is a fasting blood panel that includes a Lipoprotein Particle Test (LPP) as well as diabetes risk factors to thoroughly assess for dysmetabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk. This panel looks at elements that drive stubborn weight loss and blood sugar imbalances. This is suitable for those that are pre-diabetic, diabetic, hypertensive, have elevated cholesterol levels, heart disease risk/family history, diabetic risk/family history, sugar cravings, hypo/hyperglycemia, and are overweight.
Comprehensive Digestive and Stool
Comprehensive Digestive and Stool Test can identify if you have an imbalance of bacterial flora in the large intestine, assess for H. Pylori and other pathogens, parasites, Candida overgrowth, or issues with digestion and malabsorption. Beyond defining what is living in the bowel or GI tract, this panel digs into the elements of optimal digestion assessing enzymes, bile, pH, undigested fat, fiber, and protein. This is suitable for those experiencing digestive disturbance from diarrhea, constipation, bloating, leaky gut, gastritis, reflux, malabsorption, and extending into valued information for autoimmune disease, depression, anxiety, obesity, and more.
Thyroid Comprehensive Panel
Thyroid Comprehensive Panel is a blood panel used to determine thyroid function and can give more information to the diagnosis of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Fatigue, weight gain, sleep irregularities, hair loss and disruption in skin health can all be signs of thyroid dysfunction. This test uses 8 key indicators to give a clear picture of thyroid function including inflammatory and autoimmune response of the thyroid gland. This panel is good for those with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimotos thyroiditis, Graves disease, being treated or taking medication for thyroid, family history of thyroid conditions or currently experiencing symptoms above as well as changes in weight.
Neurohormone Complete Plus Panel
Neurohormone Complete Plus Panel is a combination of saliva and urine test used to uncover hormonal and neurotransmitter imbalances as well as disturbances in the adrenal glands. This lab is only available for women, it is a good assessment of fertility, perimenopause and hormonal shifts with aging. Cravings, brain fog, sense of vigor, mood stability, and cognitive function can also be addressed with the use of neurotransmitter testing included in this lab.
Neurohormone Complete Panel
Neurohormone Complete Panel is a combination of saliva and urine test used to uncover hormonal and neurotransmitter imbalances as well as disturbances in the adrenal glands. This lab is only available for men, it is a good assessment for males working to improve sense of vigor, sex drive, testosterone expression, fatigue, stress management, balanced mood, and regulated sleep.
Neuroadrenal Panel includes the cortisol and DHEA assessment for adrenal health and neurotransmitters of the Neurohormone Complete Panel without the sexual hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, etc.). This lab is suitable for both women and men and is a good assessment of stress response, chronic fatigue, insomnia, brain fog, cravings, anxiety, and depression.
Neurobasic Panel is a urine test that measures levels of neurotransmitters including; serotonin, GABA, dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and glutamate. These are included in both the neurohormone complete and complete plus. This lab is good for an assessment of people on antidepressants or looking to reassess the efficacy of their functional interventions for depression, anxiety, or other mood instabilities.
Weight Loss Basic
The basic panel includes assessments to look at liver, kidney health and how your body processes protein. As well as assessing your body’s stress hormone and sexual hormone builder DHEA a compound that is essential in building ketones a fuel source for a low carbohydrate diet approach. It will also look at cardiometabolic health with a 3 month average of blood sugars and fasting lipids. While providing a snapshot of your thyroid function via your thyroid stimulating hormone.
Weight Loss Plus
The advanced panel includes assessments to look at liver, kidney health and how your body processes protein. As well as assessing your body’s stress hormone and sexual hormone builder DHEA a compound that is essential in building ketones a fuel source for a low carbohydrate diet approach. It will also look at an advanced assessment of cardiometabolic health with a 3 month average of blood sugars and inflammation level as well as a lipoprotein particle distribution of cholesterol assessing risk of small dense vs. large buoyant sized particles which is more accurate to correlate disease risk over standard fasting lipids. Rather than just providing a snapshot of your thyroid function via your thyroid stimulating hormone, this panel will look at both the active and inactive form of your thyroid hormone as well as screen for inflammation to the gland with autoimmune activity.
Genetic SNP testing
The scientific study of individualized genetics and nutrition is known as nutritional genomics or “nutrigenomics”. Nutrigenomic testing accurately identifies each patients’ genetic variations to identify sites of metabolic weakness. This genetic panel uses saliva swaps to evaluate 55 of the most common researched and validated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that can affect a patient’s ability to regain and maintain their metabolic functionality.
Abnormalities in specific polymorphisms can negatively affect many physiological and biochemical processes. Overcoming these metabolic weaknesses with the right supplement allows each patient to maximize their genetic variations (SNPs) and maintain optimal health.
Each GX Sciences Nutrigenomic Test Kit identifies 55 SNPs and recommends nutrition based on scientific validation of each patient’s specific needs in 5 key metabolic areas: Methylation, Neurotransmitter, Mitochondria, Detoxification, Inflammatory Potential
HOW IT WORKS
Add test(s) to your cart and complete purchase. Allow 2-3 business days to process. Based on type of specimen: blood/serum, urine, saliva, stool you will be shipped a kit or pre-paid form and sent an email with detailed instructions.
The email will include a lab location in your area if specimen is blood, you will take the kit and pre-paid form to the lab that is provided via email correspondence with our team. They will work with you for various options if needed. Other specimens will be collected at the comfort of your home saliva, urine, stool and you will ship via the prepaid shipping label and instructions in your kit.
All labs take 2-3 weeks to process specimen from time of receipt to generate results. When available, within 2-3 business days our practitioners on staff will provide a customized email attaching the results and an interpretation with lifestyle considerations, areas of concern or what to consider addressing with your practitioner, as well as supplement recommendations. Please note, this correspondence does not make you an active patient of Naturally Nourished as there is not adequate time to review your medical history, current medications/supplements, or symptoms.
You can decide to become a patient or can purchase a 20-min Q&A to delve deeper into questions if desired per results under our consultation section.
Please note some labs are not offered in NY. Our Weight Loss panels are not offered in NY, NJ, MD, RI. If you purchased one of these labs and live in one of these states, you will be notified and reimbursed within 24 hours.
Unfortunately conventional medicine and insurance companies often do not reimburse for functional lab assessments as many see them as investigative vs. necessary. My perspective on this is noted above, it is always preferred to dig deep and understand why your body is functioning as it is.
Also, please be reminded ordering a lab online does not make you an active client of The Naturally Nourished clinic, an interpretation email with supplement recommendations will be sent to you with results but it is always suggested to review through your healthcare team.
Our virtual clinic does provides superbills only to clients for consultations. To become an active client an initial consultation must be made.
